FOCUS AREA · SUSTAINABLE LIVELIHOODS

A steady harvest is the foundation of a steady life.

We work alongside smallholder farmers to strengthen how they grow, store and sell — turning unpredictable seasons into dependable income for the whole household, without exhausting the land it depends on.

THE CHALLENGE

Farming that doesn't reach a fair market

Smallholder farmers across Northern Ghana often produce good harvests but capture little of their value — lost to poor storage, weak bargaining power with buyers, and limited access to climate-smart techniques that protect yields as rainfall patterns shift.

Without stronger links to markets, hard-won harvests translate into far less income than they should — and soil pushed too hard for too long yields less every season.

OUR APPROACH

What a ReliefEcho livelihood programme delivers

Conservation Agriculture

Practices like minimum tillage and crop rotation that conserve soil health and protect water resources while lifting productivity.

Climate-Smart Agronomy

Drought-tolerant varieties, soil health and water-efficient techniques suited to local conditions. Linked to our Climate programme →

Green Value Chain Development

Building sustainable value chains in shea, honey, cashew and other non-timber forest products that create jobs while conserving ecosystems.

Market Linkages

Connecting farmer groups directly to buyers and cooperatives, cutting out unfavourable middlemen.

Post-Harvest Storage

Better storage practices that reduce spoilage and let farmers sell when prices are strongest.

Women-Led Farming Groups

Deliberate inclusion of women farmers, who often see the least benefit from conventional programmes.

“A working borehole doesn't just deliver water — it gives back a girl's morning, a mother's afternoon, and a community's health.”

See how this looks on the ground.

Our first delivered project, Sustainable Agriculture Value Chain Empowerment, puts this approach into practice.
