FOCUS AREA · WATER, SANITATION & HYGIENE
Clean water is where every other opportunity begins.
Without safe water close to home, girls miss school to fetch it, families fall sick from what should nourish them, and whole days disappear into a walk to the nearest stream. Our WASH programmes close that gap.
THE CHALLENGE
Unsafe water costs more than health
Across rural Northern Ghana, many communities still rely on unprotected wells, seasonal streams or long treks to the nearest safe source. The cost shows up everywhere: in diarrhoeal disease among children, in girls who fall behind at school, and in hours of unpaid labour that fall disproportionately on women.
Sanitation gaps compound the problem — without safe latrines, contamination cycles back into the same water families depend on.
OUR APPROACH
What a ReliefEcho WASH programme delivers
Safe Water Points
Drilling and rehabilitating boreholes, with hand-pump or solar-mechanised systems suited to each community's scale.
Sanitation Facilities
Household and institutional latrines built to a standard that protects the water sources nearby.
Hygiene Education
Community-led hygiene promotion — handwashing, safe storage, and menstrual hygiene management for schools.
WASH Committees
Trained local committees who manage, maintain and repair water points long after our team has moved on.
Water Quality Testing
Regular testing to confirm water stays safe to drink, season after season.
School WASH
Purpose-built facilities in schools, so no child skips class for lack of a working toilet. See our Education programmes →

“A working borehole doesn't just deliver water — it gives back a girl's morning, a mother's afternoon, and a community's health.”
